BIOGRAPHY

Randolph B. (Randy) Cohen is the MBA Class of 1975 Senior Lecturer of Entrepreneurial Management at Harvard Business School.  Mr. Cohen is also a Partner at Alignvest Investment Management.Cohen teaches finance and entrepreneurship at HBS, and has previously held positions as Associate Professor at HBS and Visiting Associate Professor at MIT Sloan.

Cohen’s main research interests are the identification and selection of money managers who are most likely to outperform, and the interface between the actions of institutional investors and price levels in financial markets. Cohen has studied the differential reactions of institutions and individuals to news about firms and the economy, as well as the effect of institutional trading on stock prices. He also has researched the market for municipal securities.

In addition to his academic work, Cohen has helped to start and grow a number of businesses, mostly but not exclusively in the area of investment management, and has served as a consultant to many other companies.

Cohen holds an AB in mathematics from Harvard College and a PhD in finance from the University of Chicago.

Don Raymond, PhD:  Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer

Don Raymond is the Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer at Alignvest Management Corporation. He is Chair of the Board of Trustees of Queen’s University and past Chair of its Investment Committee. Don is also an Adjunct Professor of Finance and Chair Emeritus of the International Centre for Pension Management, both at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management. Don is also a member of the Investments and Risk Advisory Panel of the Monetary Authority of Singapore.

Prior to joining Alignvest in 2014, Don was the Chief Investment Strategist for the $220 billion CPP Investment Board (CPPIB) where he devoted 12½ years of his career to helping build CPPIB into a leading global investment organization. Don built CPPIB’s Public Market Investments department from inception and was also its first Chief Investment Strategist. In this role, he chaired CPPIB’s Investment Planning Committee, responsible for overseeing the portfolio design and management of one of the fastest-growing pools of capital in the world. He was also the principal architect of CPPIB’s innovative Total Portfolio Approach, and was instrumental in the development of the United Nations’ Principles of Responsible Investing (UNPRI), as well as their adoption by CPPIB in 2005.

Prior to joining CPPIB in 2001, Don worked for Goldman Sachs, first in Toronto as a top-ranked fixed-income strategist before moving into a global equity and fixed-income portfolio management role in New York. He began his investment career in the fixed-income derivatives department of Burns Fry, a predecessor of BMO Capital Markets. Prior to developing an interest in finance, Don worked for Schlumberger in China and trained as a pilot in the Canadian military. He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Queen’s University and a CFA charter.

Marlene Puffer, PhD:  CFA, Partner

Marlene Puffer is a Partner of Alignvest Investment Management. Ms. Puffer has more than 25 years’ experience in investments, pensions and capital markets at world-class financial institutions and in academia. Prior to joining Alignvest, Ms. Puffer was a Chief Strategist at BCA Research, a global leader in independent macro investment strategy, and she was the President and Founder of Twist Financial, an independent firm providing investment strategy and advice for institutional investors, boards, unions, government agencies, and other market participants. Ms. Puffer also serves as Board Trustee and Chair of the Asset-Liability Management Committee at the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP).

Ms. Puffer’s previous experience includes roles as chief investment officer at NAV CANADA Pension Plan, in business development and fixed income portfolio management at PIMCO Canada and Legg Mason Canada, and in debt capital markets at BMO Capital Markets and as head of fixed income analytics at RBC Capital Markets. She began her career as Assistant Professor of finance at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.

Ms. Puffer holds a Ph.D. in Finance and Applied Statistics and a M.Sc. in Business Administration from the Simon Business School at the University of Rochester, and master’s and bachelor’s degrees in Economics from the University of Toronto. She holds a CFA charter and the ICD.D designation granted by the Institute of Corporate Directors.
